Those who knew Bob describe him as warm, generous, and endlessly curious. His ability to connect with people and inspire those around him is something many will remember. His passing is a great loss, but his legacy will live on.

Below are reflections from some of those who knew him:

«I first met Bob in Fairbanks in 2000 when he was leading the work of the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment under the Arctic Council. We immediately found a common ground in our quests for understanding the interactions between climate and society, and in our love for the Arctic. Bob was both powerful and playful, and he approached everyone with the same interest and warmth regardless of position or age. He profoundly believed in the goodness of humans and was always eager to learn and develop his perspectives. He would call with a barely contained excitement about a new idea or something he had read that would expand our understanding of the world. Bob Corell never stopped asking questions – never stopped being curious – never stopped being enthusiastic – never stopped caring about people and the globe. Bob was a trail blazer, and his never-ending inspiration, support and unique ability to include everyone across cultural and scientific backgrounds will never be forgotten. With his passing I have lost a good friend, colleague and soul mate»

– Grete K. Hovelsrud, Professor Emerita, Nordland Research Institute

«Robert Corell was awarded the High North Hero Prize in 2019 especially for his contributions to Arctic science, for his work on sustainable development, and for his effort to raise awareness about the vulnerability of the High North. His contributions are enormous, and he worked tirelessly to improve understanding of the vulnerability of the Arctic, and to promote the understanding of sustainable development in our region. His engagement and enthusiasm spread easily to those around him. He will be remembered by us at the High North Center not only as High North Hero for this outstanding academic work, but also for his closeness, inspiration, and encouragement to us to continue our work in developing partnerships and knowledge essential for the future of business, governance and civil societies in the High North. A Hero has left us but what he gave us will always be close to us.»

– Frode Mellemvik, Professor Emeritus, Nord University

«Robert Corell leaves behind a legacy that surpasses what most of us could ever hope to achieve in our lifetimes. His contributions to Arctic science and Arctic communities were extraordinary, but what truly set him apart was the immense warmth and compassion he radiated. When he received the 2019 High North Hero Award, it was clear he was deeply valued and respected by many. Yet, it quickly became evident that this wasn’t one-sided. While his professional accomplishments were remarkable, it was his character—his genuine caring for others—that truly set him apart.»
